Prohibited Substances

Due to concerns surrounding the use of supplements, nutraceuticals and natural products, we feel it is important to clarify our position.

The rules of all governing bodies such as The Jockey Club and the FEI state that 'any substance having a physiological effect on a horse' can be construed as a banned substance. This, of course, is a definition that leaves an endless room for interpretation and seemingly has been made on purpose to allow for any voluntary interpretation at any given time.

Due to the complexities of modern analytical methods it is impossible to foresee the level of interpretation that this very vague definition can theoretically produce. It is therefore inappropriate for us to state that a formulation is guaranteed not to contain 'any banned substances'.

NAF does not put any ingredients into their products that are listed as prohibited substances and NAF is always to the best of their ability, in touch with the analytical routines of the testing laboratories.

No NAF product has ever been, or is ever likely to be, the cause of a positive doping sample taken from horses competing under any of the governing bodies. NAF is also to the best of their abilities anxious to avoid any possible chance of accidental contamination.

NAF is accredited by UFAS and registered by both ISO 9001 Quality Standards and with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. All possible care is taken to ensure the standards expected under these qualifications are met.

NAF are proud to be one of the first companies in the UK to meet the strict manufacturing requirements and to sign up to the BETA NOPS UFAS code.

What does this mean to you?

• BETA has recognised the concerns held by riders, particularly competitors, over the risks of Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NOPS) entering the horse’s diet. So, in response, as the governing body of equestrianism, it has established a code which is set to become a recognised standard throughout the industry.
• Those companies signing up to the BETA NOPS UFAS code will already be manufacturing to particularly high standards and have full traceability on all ingredients used, as they need to be UFAS accredited in order to join the scheme.
• However, the BETA NOPS UFAS code goes beyond the UFAS accreditation standards, as it involves further audits and inspections to ensure that the entire manufacturing process takes every possible precaution to minimise the risk of NOPS contamination.

So, when next purchasing feed or supplements do remember to check for the BETA NOPS logo on the packaging to ensure you are doing your best to protect your competition horse from taking in prohibited substances. Do not rely simply on such statements as “does not contain banned substances” or “FEI / Jockey Club safe” as these tend to be generalised blanket statements which cannot be justified or guaranteed.
